I’ve made my own chapstick for quite some time now. Today I share with you how to make your very own in this quick tutorial, with Ooby the bulldog as my most helpful assistant!
It’s really simple and takes only 3 ingredients, though you can choose to add any essential oil(s) for your desired scent.
Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons candelilla wax (about 1 oz)
- 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 Tablespoons shea butter
- Optional: any essential oil(s) for scent
Supplies
- 12 lip balm containers (or more/less, just edit the recipe)
- glass medicinal dropper
- Pot with double boiler OR
- Metal or glass bowl (if no double boiler)
Instructions
- Get your water boiling then place wax in the top of the double boiler or your makeshift bowl over the boiling water.
- Once was is FULLY melted, add in coconut oil and shea butter and stir now and then until all ingredients are melted.
- (Optional) If desired, add a few drops essential oil if desired. (I personally love the natural smell)
- Using a small medicinal dropper, transfer the liquid into the lip balm containers. Add a few extra drops to the top after filling each container as the ingredients will shrink as they cool.
- Cool completely to harden. Cover with cap and decorate or label as desired!
Let me know if you try this out. I’d love to hear how it turned out for you and if you tried anything new or added some scents!

Hey Emily,
Made some Lip Balm today, its great, I love it. Feels good on my lips, and its granddaughter approved. How do you store your raw unrefined shea butter? Mine looks like it is getting a little dark. Love your site! Give Ooby and big hug from me…she is adorable <3
Emily Moran Barwick (BiteSizeVegan) says
Awesome! great to hear this and thank for sharing :) my shea butter i just keep in a cool dark place. if it’s looking sketchy maybe you can refrigerate it? thanks for stopping by and letting me know it turned out well- i love mine ;)

Can you use Vitamin E in place of Shea Butter?
Emily Moran Barwick says
I’m not sure but I know I’ve put Vit E in mine before. Just in addition to rather than a substitution for shea butter. :)

Hi Emily! Could you tell me about how long these ingredients last on the shelf and if I could store them elsewhere, such as the refrigerator or freezer, in order to keep them longer? I love chapstick and use it multiple times per day, but I am afraid I am not going to be able to finish the entire bag of wax and shea butter before it turns.
Thank you for your time! I love your youtube channel. :)
Emily Moran Barwick (BiteSizeVegan) says
Mine have kept unrefrigerated for over a year now ;)

Hi Emily. Thank you so much for posting this video. I just made the chapstick for the first time. It feels just a tad waxy on my lips. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can fix this? Also, I used essential oils but wasn’t sure how much I could use. I only used 1 drop peppermint and 2 drops lavender but it wasn’t enough. I will use more next time. I need the healing properties of the oils. Lastly, are you able to substitute beeswax for candelilla wax in all recipes?
Emily Moran Barwick (BiteSizeVegan) says
If it’s too waxy, then increase the coconut oil or shea butter/wax ratio. The amount of essential oils is to your preference. And you could use beeswax, but then it would no longer be vegan nor cruelty free. See this video and this video.
Gretchen says
I think I am having a reaction to beeswax, which is why I liked this recipe. However, so many recipes include beeswax, which is why I was asking if you could substitute it. For instance, if I found a recipe that called for beeswax, am I able to substitute it with the candelilla wax. Would I pretty much get the same consistency or would that mess up the recipe?

Hi Emily! I made my first batch of twelve today and they turned out great. Being a lip balm addict, I can now easily keep a tube in various rooms of the house, and of course the car. I did share two with my boys and they both agree, your recipe rocked.

Awesome! So great to hear this :)

Hi. I love your page! My lip balms are grainy. Do you know what happened? Thank you!!!
Justine says
i read that you should let it sit on the heat source for a little longer after it appears to be melted to make sure that it really is throughly melted. hope this helps.
Sharron says
Thank you so much for this info. Mine turned out perfect thanks to your great instructions and this was my first time making them. Vegans rock!
Emily Barwick says
Oh YAY!! SO great to hear it ;D I need to make more myself!

Used this recipe with girls on a sleepover. They loved it! Mixed up flavors and made little mess because so few ingredients. I’m vegetarian so mom loved it too.
Emily Moran Barwick says
Oh yay!! It’s my favorite :P Thank you so much for your comment and so sorry for the delay!
Anna says
I used this recipe and the lip balm came out kind of grainy (it kind of feels like there is sand mixed in with the balm, making it a less pleasurable experience putting on). Is this because I may not have let the wax melt long enough? Did anyone else have this experience and figure out how to fix it? If it’s how the balm is supposed to be, that’s fine too. Wanted to check before I gift this to my fancy, non-vegan relatives and hear complaints! Sometimes I feel like vegan products are held to higher expectations by non-vegans, since a poor experience for them can help them justify their choices.
Note: I also added Vitamin E oil into my recipe. Not sure if this would have affected it.
Thanks,
Anna
Emily Moran Barwick says
It may be the quality of the ingredients or melting time. I’ve never had it feel grainy. Maybe the wax composition is different that what I’ve used? Sorry I’m not more helpful! I’d think maybe one of the ingredients isn’t “fine” enough or possibly not enough time for thorough melting.

OMG, I’m so excited to try this! \(*^▽^*)/
