A ridiculous showcase of over-the-top and extreme vegan conversion tactics. Vegans can be quite passionate about our beliefs and really [I mean REALLY] want everyone around us to get it too. This can sometimes translate into almost comically bizarre behavior.
When you’re newly vegan, and sometimes even when you’ve been vegan for a while, your passion for your new-found (or established) way of life knows no bounds. Like, literally NO bounds. You want everyone in the world to go vegan and are certain that if they could just see…. Sometimes this zealous desire to change the world can come out in strange (and amusing) ways. Today’s video post is a satire, or spoof if you prefer, on this phenomena of the overly intense vegan. [tweet: How NOT to Make Someone Vegan]
Watch the video for the full “lesson” but here are some basics:
1- Aggressive use of tofu always backfires [tweet this]
2- The term “nut cheese” is NOT helping your case [tweet this]
3- Promising “movie night” and delivering an Earthlings screening will not have the effect you intended [tweet this]
While this video shows the extremes, the truth is, even the most forceful, misapplied attempts at conversion usually come from a genuine place, but we all have to be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes. (Especially given how serious we vegans are prone to becoming.)
If you’re non-vegan and want a more grounded discussion of why vegans are so passionate at times, you can check out this video post. Don’t worry, it’s not graphic.
And for my vegans out there, if you want to find ways of talking about veganism that may be more effective than the ones feature in this video–which is not , do subscribe to my channel and newsletter (the box at the bottom of this post) and check out some of my videos and posts on this topic:
- effective communication with friends and family
- effective communication with non-vegans in general
- navigating social situations
- dealing with non-vegan friends and family
- effective activism
If this gave you a giggle, do share it around to give others a laugh. If you want to keep the laughter going, check out my sh*t people say to vegans video or my vegan superhero video, the veganizer, where I run about punching meat-eaters in the face and generally being a bit of a douche, or watch my far more serious explanation of why we vegans can seem so intense in my what vegans see video. The veganizer is back! (Great way to start a video, by the way.)
Really enjoyed this video. You have a great sense of humor.
The only part that really depressed me was when you said “This is how many animals are dying while you’re reading.” I didn’t laugh about that. It reminded me that right now so many animals suffer and die – and a can’t do anything about it. No matter how effective my activism is, I can’t save the animals who will be slaughtered today, tomorrow, this month, this year, next year.
I don’t mean to criticize your video. It was hilarious. Actually I think it’s a good thing to remind people that we have to laugh at ourselves every now and then – but not about veganism itself.
I’m sorry for the serious comment. The video was the best part of my day. Thank you. :)
Keep up the great work. You are one of the strongest voices the animals have right know. (The other one is Gary Yourofsky, of course.)

hehe thanks :) so glad you enjoyed it. and you’re right- it’s really heartbreaking. when filming that, i actually said after the take that “it’s actually more than that, but i can’t click that fast…” no worries brining up the serious matters- they are why i do this! much love ;)

Thanks for your “comical” nugget…I have always believed in the “wit” approach v. the “grit” ones…peace, Sista!

I loved the video and have been there at times. Are your cohorts in the video also vegan?
Emily Moran Barwick (BiteSizeVegan) says
me too :) and sadly, no, they were not.

This video is so me all the time. And now my newly vegan husband does it, too. We just can’t help it…I don’t want the people I love to drink pus and ignore the inhumanity.
It’s definitely nice to poke fun at ourselves. Many thanks for all that you. Love from Florida.

oh i feel you! this is me now and again as well and certainly the majority of my life!! much love and thanks ;)

I agree what Sophia wrote above. You have a great sense of humor, that’s why I enjoy your videos and I also appreciate you don’t forget the most important ones – animals who do die faster than you can click…it’s heartbreaking to think about that. Back to the video, it’s really hilarious, but I would never do any o those things in the video:).
